According to a recent report, over thirty percent of people who have access to the internet have engaged in online dating. Most interestingly, the biggest source of new members for dating sites is among those forty and over. Unfortunately, middle aged members are also the primary target for cyber criminals. So what makes this segment of the internet dating pool so attractive to internet hustlers?
Well, first of all, middle aged users are relatively inexperienced when it comes to technology and online dating. Unlike those of the younger generation, they have not grown up on technology and are in many cases are unfamiliar with hacking and techniques criminals use to extract information from people through the internet. Since they are not on their "guard", thieves like to focus on them since there is a higher success rate with middle aged members.
Second, that those forty and over and extremely vulnerable is that they grew up reading newspapers and not websites. Newspapers are edited and fact checked and in most cases, people can rely on the information they read in major newspapers. So when older users visit a dating site, there is an assumption that the information posted within profiles is accurate. However, as most of us know, some of the most creative writing is done on internet dating websites. The unemployed male living at his family's home can suddenly become the high powered attorney with a house on the beach, all because there is nobody to check or verify the information posted to the site.
Another reason why middle aged users of dating sites are the primary target of internet hustlers is because they are more established financially and have much more money available than younger users who may be struggling with paying for student loans, rent or finding a career. As with any industry, people go where the money is and those over forty have had been employed for much longer and have likely benefited from career growth and promotions.
